Read on… >> Running with the Nudes. Pamplona Spain July 2003 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Every year, thousands of visitors from around the world arrive in Pamplona, Spain, to join in the annual spectacle of the "Running of the Bulls." But tourists are appalled to see the terrified animals racing through streets crawling with drinking, brawling people. The bulls' hooves slip on the pavement as they race frantically, trying to escape the chaos. Sometimes, in their confusion, they bash into doors or the sides of buildings, breaking horns or legs. Human runners and spectators gouge them with sticks or pull their tails, and they, too, are sometimes injured, gored, or trampled by bulls desperate to escape.
Many tourists never return-once is more than enough. But every year, a new crop of visitors come, keeping the ugly tradition alive. That is, until now! This July, help us show the mayor of Pamplona and the House of Mercy, which organizes the Running of the Bulls, and all Spaniards and visitors that there is a win-win alternative to having a stampede of terrified animals who end up being tormented and slaughtered in the bullring
The "Human Race," scheduled for two days before the first of the bull runs, will bring compassionate and fun-loving people from around the world to the streets of Pamplona. Last year, our very first Human Race was a wild success and showed Pamplona that dumping cruelty doesn't mean losing out on tourist dollars.
July 2, 2003: Flight departs JFK airport and arrives in Madrid on the morning of the 3rd. In the afternoon, a bus will depart Madrid to Pamplona.
July 4, 2003: Spend the day sightseeing or mingling with fellow animal rights activists. We will meet in the evening to discuss the "Human Race."
July 5, 2003: On your mark, get set, go! The Human Race begins at 1 p.m. sharp. Wear your best whites-or nothing at all. After the run, a big celebration will be held in the streets in honor of everyone who participated in the Human Race and helped call attention to the suffering of the bulls.
July 6, 2003: A bus departs Pamplona to Madrid. Flights leave Madrid for JFK in the afternoon on the 7th. July 7, 2003: For those of you who want to stay on and protest at the "Running of the Bulls," rise and shine. We'll meet along the route at 5:30 (yes, that's a.m.) to get a good place to show our posters: "Leave the Bulls in Peace," "Join the Human Race," and "Stop the Bloody Bullfight."
July 8, 2003: For those who stayed the extra day to protest the Running of the Bulls, you will need to find you way back to Madrid. The flight will leave on July 9 for JFK.
