Green Earth Travel August 2003 Newsletter Fabulous Fall Getaways (August 2003) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
October has always been my favorite month. It's a time for cider, pumpkins, football (my husband's choice) and taking long walks, kicking up leaves as I go.
It is a colorful period when this country springs alive with brilliant red and gold splashes from the mountains to the coast.
October, then, is an ideal time to travel and to see, enjoy and appreciate a unique and beautiful state that the pilgrims who first discovered this place called "the goodliest land under the cope of heaven." How right they were!
As an enthusiastic traveler I invite you to come along for the ride to the East Coast.

Jacob Rohrbach Inn-Sharpsburg Maryland ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This past year I have not done much in the way of traveling but this summer my husband and I decided to take a quick getaway. I have always wanted to learn about Antietum and so I called the Jacob Rohrbach Inn in Sharpsburg.
We arrived there with a warm welcome of Joanne and Paul. Our room was the Clara Barton room which was quite fitting since we live about 1 mile from Clara Barton's house. For those who do not know her, she was the founder of the American Red Cross. She was also a vegetarian (a little trivia here).
Built around 1800, by Capt. Joseph Chapline, Revolutionary War patriot, the Inn is a perfect example of Federal Period architecture. Located in the center of quaint Sharpsburg, Maryland it is surrounded by the Antietam Battlefield, and was used as a hospital to care for the wounded following the battle. The Inn is named for Jacob Rohrbach who lost his life defending the property against horse thieves claiming to be Mosby's men on July 4th, 1864.
While best known for the Battle of Antietam, Sharpsburg also borders the C&O Canal National Park , and is the location of the Kennedy Farm, where John Brown prepared his raid on the nearby Harpers Ferry Arsenal. We have many fine restaurants and inviting shops in the area and Shepherdstown, West Virginia, home of Shepherd College is just across the river.
