Maho Bay Camps...
had its modest beginnings surrounded by the Virgin Islands National Park on St. John.
We started with 18 tent-cottages, hidden among the trees and connected by elevated, wooden walkways. Hand construction methods left nature as undisturbed as possible, avoiding soil erosion which endangers the beach and fragile coral. This sensitive land use stimulated an explosion of publicity which has encouraged our sustainable growth. Now, with 114 units we are probably the most publicized eco-tourism destination in the world.
The roomy tent-cottages, built on 16 foot square platforms are nearly hidden by the lush foliage. Translucent fabric on wood frames provide shelter while screens and terraces take advantage of the cooling trade winds. Hillside views of the turquoise Caribbean waters are commonplace from many the dwellings. Our white sand beach offers privacy and a wide variety of quiet water sports including kayaking, windsurfing, snorkeling and scuba diving.
Every spacious tent-cottage has a separate sleeping area with comfortable twin beds. An extra mattress is behind the sleeping-couch in the living area. Bed linens, blankets, towels, cooking and eating utensils are all provided, including a propane stove and ice cooler. Every tent-cottage has its own private deck, electric outlets, lights and fans. Barbecue areas and fresh water are available along the walkways.
On St. John, water is one of our most precious commodities. Maho's centrally located bathhouses are equipped with modern, low-flush toilets and pull-chain showers connected to a recycling system to irrigate the surrounding vegetation (which has actually become more lush since our arrival).
Our outdoor restaurant serves breakfast and dinner every day with a wide variety of healthful meals, including at least one vegetarian entree.
Located on one of our two large pavilions, the dining area has one of the Virgin Island's most unforgettable views, especially at sunset.
The Maho Bay store is stocked with frozen foods, produce, canned goods, breads, dairy, juices, soft drinks, beer, wine (no hard liquor), and various sundries and boutique items such as sunscreen, insect repellent, paper products (recycled), etc
Newcomers can take advantage of our free "help-yourself" center where departing guests leave books, staples and other items they don't want to carry home.
Maho Bay seems to engender a spirit of cooperation and respect for other people, plants, wildlife, and our facilities that helps us to function at reasonable cost, and in harmony with the remarkable surroundings.
